<image:title>Community stories - NEW AIR QUALITY MONITORS INSTALLED ACROSS LONDON HERITAGE QUARTER TO IDENTIFY AND HELP TACKLE POLLUTION HOTSPOTS</image:title>
<image:caption>Alison Gregory, LHQ’s Director of Placeshaping and Sustainability, said: “The BIDs that make up London Heritage Quarter have delivered air quality projects for several years and promoted the business benefits of better air quality. The newly installed air quality monitors provide another important aspect to our work and we are delighted to work with Breathe London Communities Collaboration to make more air quality information available as part of our work to improve air quality in the quarter and in Westminster.” Cllr Ryan Jude, Westminster City Council Cabinet Member for Climate Action, Ecology, Culture and Air Quality, said: “I’m glad to see Breathe London air quality monitors being installed in the London Heritage Quarter today. These affordable and easy-to-install monitors will provide precise local data, allowing us to better understand how air quality varies throughout the day and how we can take a more targeted approach to improving air quality in the city. “Air pollution is one of the greatest threats to public health. In Westminster, we have launched a new Air Quality Action Plan, which is backed by comprehensive analysis of air pollution data and provides a clear roadmap to reducing air pollution level to WHO guidelines by 2040. “Through close collaborations with our partners and a focus on collecting better and more accurate data, we are committed to cleaning up our air and creating a Fairer Environment for everyone in Westminster.”</image:caption>

<image:title>Community stories - Mayor visits Mums for Lungs Community Programme sensor</image:title>
<image:caption>Lydia Faser-Ward, Breathe London community programme recipient and Mums for Lungs campaigner said: “We are delighted to have been awarded an air quality sensor by the Mayor of London and Breathe London Community Programme. Our community in South Woodford in the London Borough of Redbridge are deeply concerned about the levels of air pollution in the neighbourhood, particularly in the playground of our lovely local park Elmhurst Gardens which sits next to the North Circular. It is thanks to this project that we now have reliable and up-to-date data which members of the public can access online. This data demonstrates when pollution levels are at their highest and acts as important evidence to lobby for mitigation measures to help to protect park users from exposure to dangerously high levels of nitrogen dioxide and particulate matter in the future.”</image:caption>

<image:caption>Deadly air pollution contributes to children developing stunted lungs, asthma and a whole host of other health issues and new research has shown that it also puts people at increased risk of developing dementia. <image:title>Community Programme - Copers Cope Area Residents’ Association - About us</image:title>
<image:caption>Copers Cope Area Residents’ Association (CCARA) is Beckenham’s largest residents association, founded in 1935 to protect and promote the interests of residents in matters of local concern. We have approximately 1,450 members and affiliates, mostly living in the Beckenham Town and Copers Cope ward, or neighbouring wards. CCARA is well-connected within the local community: we frequently monitor and make submissions on planning and licensing applications, advocate for improvements to transport services or public spaces, and are involved in the ward’s Safer Neighbourhood Panel, Beckenham’s Town Centre Team, and Bromley Environment Network.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Surrey Docks Farm is a working community farm in South London. Greeenagers Youth group - 14-18year old. We meet weekly Friday - Sundays. The young people are based in Southwark from diverse backgrounds; culturally and class, with varying educational needs. We have unschooled, comprehensive, SEN and private school educated young people in the groups. It intends to model community and establishes long relationships with the young people and their families, and sits in a wider Southwark community. It's both an educational and social group, led by youth workers and volunteers. The group work on most aspects of farm life and land based skills - managing their allotment, animal care, food cultivation and cooking, herb drying, youth enterprise, bush craft skills, rural crafts and art projects, some building and maintenance. Alongside this is a focus on sustainability and environmental education and action. The group was set up and designed by the farms youth committee and regularly consults the groups to inform the direction of projects.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Community Programme - Havering Cyclists - About us</image:title>
<image:caption>The UK has the highest level of traffic congestion in Europe, largely because cars are used for many short journeys that could be done on foot or by bicycle. Many of the UK’s transport problems could be solved if more people adopted a more ‘Continental’ approach to getting around and simply selected whatever mode of transport was the most appropriate for a given journey. For some trips a car may well be the most practical choice. However, for many short journeys traffic jams and parking hassles often mean cycling is a far quicker and less stressful option. Often the most difficult step is to recognise that a better way is possible. Cycling is far more practical than many people imagine. For example, it is possible to safely carry a surprising amount of shopping on a cycle and the risk of being killed or seriously injured when cycling is actually very low. Some might wonder why people still cycle even when the weather is bad. Simply answered the positive aspects of cycling are so great a little rain is not going to put them off! There is no need to ‘become a cyclist’ in order to enjoy the benefits of cycling. In reality the often-made distinction between ‘cyclists’ and ‘motorists’ is an artificial one. Social surveys even show that ‘regular’ cyclists actually have higher levels of car ownership than the average! So why cycle? Firstly, cycling is often the quickest and most practical way of getting around in town – Personal, door to door travel whenever you want it. Utility cycling is also one of the best ways of creating a less stressed, healthier lifestyle. Regular cyclists suffer far less from obesity, heart disease, diabetes and cancer then those who live a sedentary car bound lifestyle. They even are less prone to psychological problems such as depression! The health benefits of cycling outweigh the risk from accidents by a factor of at least 20 to 1. If you cycle to work, this means that you start the day invigorated and refreshed with no need to have that 2 cups of coffee ‘jump start’ once you arrive. Cycling is good for everyone else too. Cycling cuts pollution and helps create a more ‘human’ environment. It is even good for the economy! There are many costs to society associated with car use that are often overlooked. For example, the costs of road deaths and injuries, pollution and congestion. A consideration of such factors reveals that it would make economic sense to pay people to cycle rather than use their car! Even small changes in travel behaviour can make a big difference. If everyone were to cycle to work only twice a month, average traffic levels would drop by 10%. So get out on your pedals and start to make a difference!</image:caption>

<image:caption>R-Urban Poplar is an eco-civic hub located on the edge of the Teviot estate, in Poplar, London. The project aims to develop civic resilience in the face of climate change through a public programme of events, workshops and infrastructures. We have two main strands to our work, the first works towards prototyping a just food system which places circularity at its heart, the second focuses on resource re-use and repair. Leaders in Community is a youth-led charity run by a group of active local young people from Tower Hamlets. We were set up in 2009 by a group of young adults who wanted to improve their local services. We have a variety of creative learning programmes aimed to empower young people in leadership and governance. The programmes run throughout the year and are free for all young people.</image:caption>

<image:title>Community Programme - Falcon Residents Association and Bloomsbury Air - About us</image:title>
<image:caption>The Falcon Residents Association (FRA) is an advocate for change within the heart of the Tybalds Close Estate, it represents the interests and concerns of more than 150 residents. The Falcon building is a component of the larger Tybalds Close Estate, a close-knit social housing community that houses over 1000 individuals. A majority of these residents come from a diverse and low-income backgrounds. Situated within the 25% most deprived addresses in the UK, both Falcon and the Tybalds Estate confront substantial challenges. According to the Index of Multiple Deprivation, they rank 2 out of 10 for Income and an even lower 1 out of 10 for Living Environment. This stark depiction of deprivation underscores the pressing need for positive change. Adding to this the location falls within the 99th percentile of the most polluted addresses in the UK, a disconcerting revelation. This unsettling fact casts a grim shadow on the daily lives of residents and highlights the immediate urgency of addressing their living and surrounding environmental challenges. Biography of Bloomsbury Air: Championing Clean Air for a Decade For more than a decade, Bloomsbury Air has been an energetic force driving change within the local community to ensure cleaner air for all. With an impressive social media following of over 2000 followers, our group serves as a collaborative hub that partners closely with various stakeholders to instigate positive transformations. We have worked with Camden Council, Mums for Lungs, The Air Team, Mapping for Change and local schools and businesses among others.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The Rural Urban Synthesis Society (RUSS) is a community land trust based in south London. Founded in 2009, and now with over 1000 members, we aim to create sustainable community-led neighbourhoods and truly affordable homes right across the city. In 2021, we started work on a mixed-tenure, mixed-income development of 36 residential dwellings that will be permanently affordable and partly self-built by a team of dedicated volunteers. As we aim to establish a precedent in environmentally just, community-led housing provision, the project includes a range of design features that reduce the residents’ dependence on fossil fuels and facilitate biodiversity within the shared garden space.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Community Programme - Friends of Limehouse - About us</image:title>
<image:caption>Friends of Limehouse is an East London non-profit organization focused on improving the local environment starting with air quality. We want to transform local air quality by uniting residents, communities, businesses, and authorities to support London's ambition as a Green City. Air pollution in Limehouse is one of the worst in London and is higher by 30% than in the rest of Tower Hamlets. It is over twice the legal limit due to the fumes from the Rotherhithe and Limehouse Link Tunnels and the lack of green space. Limehouse still looks like when it was a working dock, with very little green space. Using a strategic, evidence-based approach, we work on multiple levels to improve air quality. We run environmental media and local events, educating the residents about air pollution and providing a safe, inclusive space for discussing complex issues we face with climate change. We work with authorities to reduce the number of cars, manage traffic using modern AI systems, provide safe walking and cycling options, and build Green Infrastructure absorbing pollution. As part of the Neighbourhood Forum, there were four personal consultations and a media one with several hundred residents of Limehouse. Most participants emphasized the lack of open spaces — in other words, Green Infrastructure. UCL were invited to find evidence for these results. UCL's research states that Limehouse is the most polluted area of Tower Hamlets, with three times the population density of London and not enough green space, which is a Local Plan stated deficiency. These results were taken to ARUP, the world's leading architectural bureau specializing in air pollution. ARUP proposed creating a Green Infrastructure Master Plan for Limehouse. Master Plan would provide a vision for sustainable development of the area reducing air pollution, uniting and empowering local communities and mitigating climate change. It will cost £50,000, plus its implementation and regular maintenance. The borough of Tower Hamlets has this budget from developers' contributions to the area. However, the budget is on hold. We have corresponded with the GLA and TfL to address vehicle emissions and request a highway assessment of the local road network. Adjustments to specific junction layouts and signal phasing timings could result in improved traffic flows and significant reductions in air pollution. GLA, SusTrans, and CIHT support our vision for improving air quality in Limehouse.</image:caption>

<image:title>Community Programme - Air on the Green - About us</image:title>
<image:caption>Air on the Green is a voluntary-led community group composed of a diverse group of residents and businesses based in Newington Green and Green Lanes in North London that are directly affected by toxic smoke emitted by nearby restaurants, which we believe far exceed safe levels. Air on the Green would like to better understand the significance of charcoal burning and other unfiltered particulate emissions from restaurants on air quality and health. The concern is that high levels of particulates in unfiltered restaurant pollution might be putting residents at risk of a range of health impacts, including respiratory and cardiovascular risks.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Community Programme - Clean Air Beckton - About us</image:title>
<image:caption>Clean Air Beckton started when Tollgate Medical Centre invited Ellen Wilkinson Primary School to team up to think about the air quality in the area , and how that impacts on our Children’s health and their education. Tollgate Medical Centre and The Ellen Wilkinson Primary School are located on Tollgate Road in the London borough of Newham. In 2020 The British Heart Foundation ranked Newham as the worst local authority for air quality in the UK. In addition to poor air quality, Newham has some of the worst London wide health statistics. We know the very young and those with respiratory and circulatory illnesses are the most vulnerable to poor air quality. We also know that one in twenty road journeys is healthcare related. That is why it made sense for a GP practice of 18000 patients and a local primary school of 480 pupils to come together to take action on local air quality. Our students, patients and staff are representative of this borough’s great diversity. Almost 70% of the Ellen Wilkinson pupils have English as an additional language (with 47 different first languages). Together we want to raise awareness, reduce exposure and improve air quality on Tollgate Road.</image:caption>

<image:title>Community Programme - Clean Air for Southall and Hayes (CASH) - About us</image:title>
<image:caption>Clean Air for Southall and Hayes (CASH) was established in 2018 in response to residents' concerns about the air pollution from the Green Quarter (Southall Gasworks). The site is a highly contaminated former gasworks and there is concern that it hasn't been remediated properly by Berkeley Group. Residents have reported asthma, cancer and pneumonia linking these illnesses to the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) which have become airborne as a result of excavation and soil movements on site. We are campaigning for the regulator, Ealing Council to serve an abatement notice on Berkeley Group for statutory odour nuisance. As a result of publicity generated by the documentary 'Is My Neighbourhood Poisoning Me?' CASH became a founding member of Gasworks Communities United (GCU), an alliance of campaign groups and individuals concerned about the redevelopment of gasworks. Southall is a multi-ethnic area, experiencing deprivation and multiple inequities and the environmental injustice created by the remediation of the Green Quarter is another unfair challenge, creating further disadvantage for residents living in Southall.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Since its troubled history in the 1980s, our Council-owned Estate has gone through waves of periodic refurbishment. A quarter of the Estate is to be rebuilt, the rest refurbished. We are in the middle of a trial Low Traffic Network. We are a diverse group of residents drawn from the over 4000 Estate dwellers here. We communicate with one another through our Facebook Group and mix at events in our Community Centre. We have different backgrounds, views and identities and so have a wide range of views and opinions. Some of us have got together through our local Repair Café to respond to Climate Change.</image:caption>

<image:caption>We are a group of residents living on and near South Lambeth Road in Stockwell, Lambeth. We came together over the last year or two to advocate for communities like ours who are often forgotten about, namely those living on A-roads in cities. After doing manual traffic counts on our road and trying to lobby the council to install a AQ monitor we saw the BL programme advertised and want to now use our membership of the network and data from the node to boost awareness of AQ issues facing residential main road communities.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Community Programme - Brixton Central - About us</image:title>
<image:caption>Brixton is an area of social deprivation, with the busy A23 road running through it. We are serving the local Brixton area with up-to-date data from our Breathe London node positioned right at the heart of Brixton, opposite Windrush Square. We are supplying data and analysis through our weekly blog: airaware.substack.com and hope to give residents, including the most vulnerable such as children, the information and means to live healthier lives. Louise Thomas (project lead) has had children in the local area for almost 12 years and lived around Brixton since 1999. She recently took a break for a career as a civil servant to join a venture builder focused on eliminating environmental threats to our health, and holds a BA in Mathematical Science and a Masters in Public Administration. Sacha Manson-Smith (technical lead) is the Chief Technology Officer of Beryl, a micromobility company that helps people get around cities in a sustainable way. He is committed to improving the quality of air in the urban environment, and recently presented at Cycle City 2022 in Sheffield on how the use of data can help build sustainable travel solutions. He has lived in Brixton for five years and served as a school governor of Harris Academy Bermondsey and Harris Academy Peckham. He holds a PhD in Physics.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Community Programme - Rainham Against Pollution - About us</image:title>
<image:caption>Rainham Against Pollution is a local community pressure group created arising from a public meeting attended by approximately 200 local residents in the summer of 2022, in response to the continual poor air quality in the area, predominantly arising from continual fires (still not fully extinguished) within the illegal landfill of a gravel extraction site. The exact nature of what is burning underground is currently unknown. This site is surrounded by residential properties to the east and north, a golf course to the west and the village of Wennington and A13 road to the south. Rainham, in the south of the London Borough of Havering has historically suffered from poor air quality from various sources and from its geographical location. The continual smoke and fumes from the landfill site in 2022 (The Fire Brigade have attended the site over 80 times in the last two years) causing health issues and a generally unpleasant environment for local residents brought things to a head. Rainham Against Pollution are working to improve air quality for local residents and users of the golf course, currently focusing primarily on holding the relevant authorities to account and campaigning for short and long term solutions to this major source of local air pollution which comes on top of the wider air pollution issues of Greater London.</image:caption>

<image:title>Community Programme - Friends of Woodcock Park - About us</image:title>
<image:caption>We are both the Friends of Woodcock Park, Kenton, Harrow, (London Borough of Brent) and the Brook Way Community Biodiversity Project CIC. We live close to the Kenton Road which runs from Kingsbury to Harrow and has constant traffic including HGVs. Both organisations meet regularly, have constitutions and are supported by Brent Council. We have one primary school and two secondary schools close to the Kenton Road and we have close links with the Kenton Traders Association (KTA). The local community is fully supportive of our efforts to improve the local environment and we represent a diverse range of residents across the age groups. Woodcock Park was a vital health lifeline for a lot of local residents during the Covid-19 lockdowns and was awarded a gold in the Parks Section of the London in Bloom judging in 2021. We have had serious problems with pollution of the Wealdstone Brook this year - this is a river course that runs through Woodcock Park. We are campaigning to make rapid improvements in the water quality and the surrounding areas. Having additional air quality readings and data in the vicinity of the Brook and the Park would help us raise the profile of our campaign and make a contribution to improving the biodiversity in the area and through that the air quality.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Florence Road Residents Group (FRRG) initially developed as a WhatsApp group in 2019 and formalised as a constituted community group in 2021 as a positive response to the pandemic to support residents on the street. Our key aims are to promote, protect and enhance the quality of life and wellbeing for all those who live along Florence Road, from New Cross Road to Lewisham Way. Many residents have been affected by poor physical and mental health, financial difficulties and other wider issues – the aim of the group is to support their wellbeing. Florence Road in New Cross is a residential street but also a busy ‘B’ road with high traffic/pollution levels. Florence Road is the only two-way cut through road in the area that connects two heavily congested A-roads. Homes on the street are classed as being in 'Very High Pollution'.</image:caption>

<image:title>Community Programme - Mums for Lungs Redbridge - Elmhurst Gardens - About us</image:title>
<image:caption>Mums for Lungs is a grassroots organisation made up of ordinary people all connected by a shared concern about air pollution. We’re not all mums. We’re not all parents. But we are all active citizens raising awareness about the risks of toxic air and the harm it causes to our health and the health of our families. Mums for Lungs Redbridge is a brand new branch initiated by local mum Lydia Fraser-Ward who was concerned about air pollution levels in the outdoor children’s play area of her local park which borders the North Circular. The group actively campaigns throughout the London Borough of Redbridge for more air quality monitoring in outdoor play areas and gyms, whilst also supporting parents to set up School Streets and raises awareness of the risks of idling car engines and wood burning.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Community Programme - Clean Air Bayswater - About us</image:title>
<image:caption>At the end of 2021, a group of local residents came together and created the Clean Air Bayswater Group. Our aim is to encourage everyone to take action to improve the air quality in our part of Westminster. We hope to do this by involving local schools, residents and businesses, so that we can all really make a difference. Our community engagement started with an Air Pollution Assembly at St Stephen’s Primary School in May, where Andrew Grieve and Kayla Schulte (scientists from Imperial College’s Breathe London Programme) spoke to all the pupils about the causes of air pollution and the actions we can take to reduce our exposure. clean-air-bayswater.co.uk</image:caption>

<image:caption>RERA (Rectory Road N16 Residents Association) got together in early 2020 to campaign against AirPollution. We represents a community that includes both residents and families with kids at LindenChildren’S Centre. Rectory Road is a residential road, cut through by the A10, including: ●The Common at the top: a green space, which during lockdown/covid has become really important to manypeople as a park, exercise space and a place to meet friends. ●A severed and densely populated residential street with a mixture of social and privately ownedhouses / flats and a large Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic community, with many elderlies, vulnerableand low income individuals in bedsits and flats. ●Linden Children’s Centre, a daycare and nursery, with kids 0-5 years old, with a playground adjacent totheroad, with lack of green infrastructure, safe walking and crossing for the kids or their parents across the A10.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Barking Food Forest is a new community gardening project in Barking Riverside that will benefit local children, young people, families and wider residents of all ages. The Barking Food Forest will be next to the Riverside Campus. It is a great location that boasts part of the nearby Thames Estuary, in which Brackish water species live. It will also provide a much needed community green space, which is lacking in Thames Ward due to being cut off by the A13. twcp.org.uk</image:caption>

      <image:title>Community Programme - Harlesden Neighbourhood Forum - About us</image:title>
<image:caption>Harlesden Neighbourhood Forum is group of local people working together to make Harlesden a better place in which to work and live. The initial purpose of the Forum was to create a Neighbourhood Plan for Harlesden. This is a document that clearly states what we, as a community, want to see happen in Harlesden in terms of planning and development. For example, do we want more affordable housing in the area? Do we need to improve the mix of businesses on the high street? Do we want to protect our green spaces from development? Our Neighbourhood Plan was ratified by referendum and adopted by Brent Council in June 2019. You can find out more about it here. harlesdenneighbourhoodforum.com</image:caption>

<image:title>Community Programme - What is the Breathe London Community Programme?</image:title>
<image:caption>The Breathe London Community Programme is an exciting three year programme which aims to provide sixty fully funded Breathe London Nodes to community groups and organisations across London. The programme is run by Imperial College London with funding provided by Bloomberg Philanthropies. We are starting off with ten Nodes in this first year with a further thirty Nodes in year two and twenty Nodes in year three.</image:caption>

<image:title>Community Programme - What are we looking for?</image:title>
<image:caption>We’re looking for groups with a passion to monitor and improve air quality in their area. We know from research that exposure to air pollution in London varies by age, relative deprivation and ethnicity with those in more deprived areas suffering higher exposures than those in less deprived areas. The Breathe London Community Programme is open to everyone but we are particularly keen to encourage applications from groups in areas most affected by pollution. We are looking for projects that: Can lead to an improvement in local air pollution or a reduction in exposure to pollution (or both). Include a strong aspect of community involvement. Are representative of the diversity of London. We have produced a Guide which goes through some of the things to consider before applying for a Breathe London Node (note that we will help with placement of Community Programme Nodes on TfL infrastructure). We’ll also be looking to showcase successful groups on the website as part of our Community Stories feature.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Community Programme - How are applications assessed?</image:title>
<image:caption>Applications will be assessed by our independent panel. <image:title>Home (with AirQuality link) - Breathe London Pilot.</image:title>
<image:caption>The Breathe London network started with a pilot scheme back in 2018. The project was convened by C40 Cities and the Mayor of London, with funding from the Children’s Investment Fund Foundation and Clean Air Fund. The pilot scheme aimed to better understand the exposure of Londoners by testing the reliability and accuracy of a lower-cost stationary sensor network and providing hyperlocal data to the public. It consisted of serval elements including static sensors, wearable sensors and monitoring on Google cars. The wearables element was delivered by the Environmental Research Group with school children wearing backpacks with built in sensors made by Dyson. As part of the package, we also brought the use of the name Breathe London. The static sensor element was delivered by a consortium of experts led by the Environmental Defense Fund; 100 sensors were deployed across the city for a period of 2 years. Data from the pilot scheme can be found here on the Breathe London Pilot website and further details can be found in the Breathe London Technical Report (Pilot Phase).</image:caption>
